I love the humor in Verginer's sculptures and the visual impact of the vibrant color blocking is so striking. These make me want to try wood-working so badly. Has anyone else sculpted in wood? What is it like compared to sculpting in clay?

I'm pretty bummed that I didn't make it to Roth's last show in San Francisco.  It would have been awesome to see these pieces up close.  I guess stopping by the gallery might be a good idea, they probably have a piece or two still up.  Anywho, aren't they wild? Walnut, gold leaf, and swarovski- damn!

Speechless... I've never seen puppets look so bad-ass.

There is something about these sculptures that I just find charming. Actually at first I thought they were made of clay... I was really surprised and intrigued to find they were wooden. Okay some of them are really obviously wooden, but the first I saw were not. :)

Stillwell 2009: An annual jurried exhibition of student work

So the Stillwell is the annual juried art show at SFSU. I didn't submit anything this year because I was unaware of the show until a week or two before the submission deadline. Definitely not enough time to get any work together to submit. And after the apartment fire the March before last, I don't have any work that I am confident in sharing with people. Enough said... there were some cool pieces overall. A couple paintings I really liked, a couple sculptures that were really interesting, and our grad student Shenny Cruces had a couple pieces too (pictured).  And I looooooove her work.  Love, love, love, love.  So I took pictures to share with you. Neato, huh?

There's just something I like about these sculptures.  I think in my Venice Beach fantasy you find things like this when beach-combing. It's wood, right? And his illustrations are gorgeous. Lot's more where it came from, too.

Pruitt Has an awesome blog, too.

Derek Weisberg

Sarah Zehr, these are for you.

Derek Weisberg lives and works in Oakland where he received his BFA from CCA(c) in 2005. What astounds me about Weisberg's work is not just the freshness of content and the uniqueness of aesthetic but the sheer amount of work he puts out. I don't know how he does it. He has literally hundreds of sculptures under his belt from over the past several years, which is probably why it was difficult for me to only pick a few to show here. You must, if you are intrigued by what's shown here, you must check out the artist's website for even more images.

These are just so incredibly kick-ass. I think I have a new art crush, sorry Furminsky.
