Open 4 Discussion: Uninspired...

I'm feeling kinda uninspired lately... The blog feels a little stodgy to me, I haven't run across much work that is getting me going, I'm procrastinating about my beefing up my studio and not excited for school this semester...

I dunno, I thought I'd put it to all of you faithful readers. Talk to me...

What do you do when plagued by lack of inspiration?

Whose work are you totally in love with right now?

What is something new you would like to see on this blog?

Let me know.

Also, the above photo is one of my sculpture pieces from last semester. I need a good place to put it. Haven't got a clue where.

Well, since you ask, when I'm uninspired I make simple things, such as bowls, or I simply knead, till the inspiration comes (or not).

I'm learning that art, like so many other things in life, must be done in a disciplined manner. That means working through the valleys of uninspiration. I don't have any specific plan of attack at those points, just try to keep going forward with my previous goals (or possibly create new ones).

hello, i know that feeling and january is probably the most uninspiring/depressing and unproductive month of the year.....so i'd suggest surrender...do something else entirely ....walking.. reading ..movies.....you can find inspiration in the most unexpected places.. .....sometimes blogging can be inspiring .recently ...i found this womans blog and just love her work and thoughts .....http://sandraeterovic.blogspot.com/
i'd love to see more of your stuff and what your doing, and your thought processes ... i sometimes get confused as to what work is yours or someone elses... ,i really like that piece with the eye.... ...whats the story behind that?

I've got the January Blahs too... busy doing lots of work in other peoples studios on projects outside of my own personal studio work... lots of writing too, but I'm not hitting post... maybe it's the rain.

Honestly, I love your blog.
You share a fantastic look at artists that I would otherwise never get to see.
I found that I live with my nose pressed way to close to my own work to have a really good view of what's going on in the world ceramics.
My hats off to you, and thanks!

Yes! I have the lazy grey blahhhhs!

It is a chore to make it to the studio right now. But I love your blog and find inspiration there. And I use it as a resource to inspire my ceramic students. Thanks so much!

when I'm feeling uninspired, I take a day trip somewhere completely different and relax and then inspiration comes back to me. I was feeling that way lately, but now that the sky is blue I'm feeling a lot better, must be winter blues.

Funny enough I was going to write a very similar post myself. I designed my first room for a client and while it was successful, it has left me feeling drained and disconnected. I definitely have design 'blahs' right now and have even been avoiding my usual diet of blogs. Maybe I'm just tired. I have no answers, just commiseration.

Here, I would like to see you talk more about your own work and work process. Not sure you want to explicate all of its meaning on a blog, but it would interest me.

When uninspired I go here: http://carolinedouglas.blogspot.com/

Who I love now (and for the last 2+ years): http://carolinedouglas.blogspot.com/

Who I'd love to see you feature: http://carolinedouglas.blogspot.com/

Does it get any better? Make sure to look at her sculpting video on the right side of her blog. She rocks!

Also, I agree with Alexis, more about your work would be inspiring. You are quite original!

hi J-Lu! First, love your blog! As I've said, it's so clear and bright - you are an inspiration, even if you don't feel 'inspired' at the moment. So, thank you for having the MUDBUCKET!

I've been going through a spate of down time too; I just got back to clay after two months off; and I was almost nervous about starting back in studio; but after a few days I was getting a groove on (at least I'd like to think so ha-ha:). My thing about 'down time' is to just do something else. I surf and the water is a wonderful place to be. I learned to knit (poorly) over my break and as I'm a painter; I painted a little. My main excercise for inspiration is to look at other art - pics, anything, go to shows, museums. I just take in a ton of imagry and let it stew and wait for it to pop out. Probably sounds silly; but it works for me.

I also think the 'down times' are just as important as the creative times - I just think it's as much a part of the creative process for an artist.

BTW - the changes here look great!

I know how that feel. I was taking brake from sculpture for a year now. yesterday before I fall a sleep I just have an idea to make a sculpture piece. sometime is good to take a break but the key is keep working(maybe drawing, pottery or photos.) don't stop! I love your blog and keep on posting :-)
