Alice R. Ballard

I love Ballard's sculptures.  They are so gentle yet so demanding of the viewer's attention.  Ballard works interestingly as well.  She uses a lot of molds to create the basic structure of her forms and then layers on the gorgeous texture by hand.  I won't even try to speculate how she creates the surface treatment.  Is it glaze or oxides or what? Whatever it is, it's stunning.

  1. I had the good fortune to be in one of Ballard's workshops last year; it was great. She uses oxides and terra sigillatta. She does one layer of terra sig., burnishes it, then does another layer and burnishes again. LBailey
